This article is aimed at the beginner open water swimmer. We provide tips for safe open water swimming. In the article you will find the most popular products for open water swimming.
1. Get a wetsuit if you plan to swim a longer distance. A wetsuit not only warms you up when the water is still cool, but it also makes swimming safer because of its buoyancy.
2. Always take a friend with you when swimming in the open water, especially if you're going further from the shore. If swimming alone, stay close to shore and swim towards the shore.
3. Always take a safety buoy and a colourful swim cap with you when you go open water swimming, as they help you to see other people in the water and keep your head warmer. Avoid swimming in waters with motorised traffic, as it is almost impossible to see a swimmer from a speeding boat. The buoy can also be used as a "float" if you want to rest in the middle of a trip.
4. Start slowly and get used to open water in moderation. Swimming in open water is different from swimming in a pool because the water looks black and is usually colder. Give yourself time to get used to the new swimming environment.
5. Learn to navigate in open water. The biggest difference from swimming in a pool is that you can't see the bottom and there are no railings, so you have to look at the surface to find your way. Choose landmarks (e.g. a cottage on the beach, a jetty) and head towards them. Raise your head out of the water until your eyes are above the water surface and orient yourself every five strokes or so.
6. Take your time to get used to more challenging conditions. Once you get used to the open water, it's a good idea to go swimming in the wind sometimes. Waves bring their own challenges to open water swimming, but you can learn to swim in them with practice. Remember to navigate often enough and focus on swimming at your own leisurely pace!
7. Wear something warm after swimming. The water stays warm even when the weather gets cold from time to time during the summer, so you can usually swim all summer long. In cooler weather, it's a good idea to wear plenty of clothes before and especially after the swim to avoid colds and flus.
8. Remember to enjoy!
