What is needed for swimming lessons and baby swimming? A guide to the right equipment

What does a child need for swimming lessons?

Starting swimming lessons often raises the same question: What do you need for swimming lessons and baby swimming?

Equipment depends on the child's age, but most often, you only need:

For baby swimming:
- a swim nappy (Happy Nappy type)
- a full-body swimsuit

For children's swimming lessons:
- a swimsuit or swimming trunks
- swimming goggles
- a swim belt or float vest (if needed)
- a towel

Nothing else is usually needed to start.

The goal of swimming lessons is for the child to learn in the water calmly, safely, and at their own pace.
Therefore, the role of equipment is primarily to support learning, not to replace it.

On this page, we have compiled a clear guide to children's swimming lesson equipment so you can prepare for the first time without guessing.

The most important things are comfort and hygiene

When it comes to baby swimming, the equipment is very simple, yet all the more important.

A swim diaper is often necessary.
Many swim schools – including FitPit – specifically recommend Happy Nappy type models because they fit snugly and prevent accidents in the water.

In addition, a good choice is:

a full-body swimsuit with small legs, such as the Splash About Warm in One model.

  • keeps the baby warm
  • fits better than a traditional swimsuit
  • works well with a swim diaper

Remember when going to baby swimming that not all swim diapers meet the requirements, and swimming pools may also have their own guidelines regarding this. Always check the practice before attending baby or family swimming sessions.

Required equipment, more learning

When a child transitions to proper swimming lessons, the most important thing is not the amount of equipment –

but that the child dares to be in the water and try things out.

Here's how to get started safely:

Swimming headband
Helps the child find the correct position in the water and provides adequate support without restricting movement.

Swimming goggles
One of the most important pieces of equipment.
When a child can see underwater, the threshold for getting their face wet significantly lowers.

Swimsuit
A good option, especially if the child is nervous about water or needs more confidence. However, check beforehand if

What about other equipment?

Swimming schools often use various aids that make practice more relaxed:

  • Noodle → balance and buoyancy
  • Diving rings → encourage diving and playing in the water

These are not mandatory, but they can make practice more fun for the child. These are provided at swimming school, but if you are practicing with your child in your free time, they can be a good addition.

What is not needed for swimming lessons?

Not all equipment supports learning – some can even hinder it.

The following are generally not recommended for swim lessons:
- diving masks or snorkels
- swim rings or large floats
- armbands

These can prevent a child from learning body control in the water and create a false sense of security.

How to test the fit of your swimming goggles

1. Put the glasses on your forehead

1. Put the glasses on your forehead

First, place the goggles on your forehead and pull the silicone straps over the back of your head. The straps should not be too tight – their purpose is to hold the goggles in place, not to squeeze your head.

2. Put on your glasses

2. Put on your glasses

Gently place the goggles over your eyes and lightly press the silicone seals onto your face. Hold the frames, not the straps.

3. Test the suction cup effect

3. Test the suction cup effect

Gently pull the goggles away from your face by holding the lens frames. Properly fitting goggles will form a light suction-cup-like seal against your face.
