Four things that ruin an ice swimming trip

If you have been ice swimming, you will surely recognize at least one of these. There is a solution for each of them.

Tunnistatko?

Your toes and ankles start to ache before you have a chance to relax.

In cold water, the body first protects the core and reduces blood flow to the legs. The ankles have little muscle or fat for protection, so the cold feels like a stinging pain in them within just a few seconds.

Ratkaisu Aqua Socks 2.5 mm neoprene socks

2.5 mm neoprene and heat-bonded seams keep the warmth inside. The long cuff rises above the ankle and also protects the shin — exactly the area left exposed by short socks.

My fingers are stiffening, and my grip on the ladder doesn't feel secure.

The same phenomenon in the hands: heat escapes quickly from the fingers and wrists, and sensation is lost. Getting out of the ice hole using a railing or ladder becomes stiff.

Ratkaisu Aqua Gloves neoprene gloves

The flexible neoprene fits the hand in a way that allows finger movement and maintains grip. The long cuff extends over the wrist, preventing cold water from flowing in through the sleeve.

The trip to the ice hole makes me more nervous than the water itself.

Icy pier, snowdrift and sanding grit with bare feet. Often the worst moment isn't in the water, but walking there.

Ratkaisu AquaTherm neoprene shoes

The non-slip sole provides grip on icy stairs and docks, and the drawstring keeps the shoe on your foot even in water. The shoe can be worn over a sock.

The cold only hits you once you get out of the water.

Wet skin and wind are a combination that cools you down faster than the water itself. A towel is not enough, and changing clothes outdoors is difficult.

Ratkaisu Aqua Thermal changing robe — coming soon

A long, loose-fitting coat with a windproof shell and a fleece lining. You pull it on over your wet swimsuit and change into dry clothes underneath it.

Our Story

Why did we start making ice swimming equipment

Ice swimming is one of the most Finnish things we know. Yet, for a long time, the market lacked gear specifically designed for it. What was available were neoprene socks and gloves with cuffs that stopped right at the ankle and wrist—the very spots where the cold gets in.

We decided to make them ourselves. We leveraged years of experience with swimming gear, developed designs in collaboration with Olympic swimmers, and tested them with ice swimmers until they worked in an actual ice hole, not just on paper.

Our first product was the neoprene ice swimming sock. This winter, the same line also includes gloves, shoes, and a changing robe—and we are collaborating with Suomen Latu.

  • 2.5 mm neoprene, heat-bonded seams90% neoprene and 10% nylon. The seams prevent water from passing through, keeping the heat inside.
  • A shaft that protects the ankles and wristsThere is little protective tissue around the ankles and wrists, and that is where the cold creeps in first. That is why the sock shaft rises above the ankle and the glove over the wrist.
  • Designed in FinlandProducts and packaging are designed in Finland. We manufacture them in factories that we have visited ourselves.
  • Tested by winter swimmersNothing was brought to market unfinished. We developed the products together with winter swimmers.

What users are saying

The sock is snug but easy to put on and take off. My toes freeze and start to ache when I'm in the water for a long time — this clearly helped with that.

Matti Mattsson
Olympic medalist, swimming

When your hands and ankles are protected, you can be in the water in a completely different way. With socks on, you can walk from the sauna to the ice hole even through deep snow.

Socks and gloves extend the open-water season into colder waters in both spring and autumn.

Four questions before the first time

Do I really need gloves and socks?

To get started, all you need is a swimsuit and a towel. Your hands and feet cool down the fastest in cold water, so if your fingers or toes get cold, or if you want to stay in the water longer, neoprene gear is the first thing you should buy.

How do I choose the size?

A snug fit is correct: loose neoprene allows water to move, and heat escapes. To make dressing easier, put the products on dry skin.

Are they kept in the sauna?

You may keep your socks and gloves on throughout your sauna and ice swimming trip. After use, rinse with clean water and air dry at room temperature.

What if the size doesn't fit?

The return policy is 30 days. Shipments depart from Finland in 1–3 business days, and customer service is available to help with size exchanges.

The season has already begun. Don't be cold for the first time.
