The ice swimming season is starting again. Many beginners notice the same thing during their first few times: the body adapts to the cold surprisingly quickly, but the toes and fingers do not. That is exactly what neoprene ice swimming socks and gloves are made for.
Do you need equipment right from the start?
You can start ice swimming with just a swimsuit and a towel. However, equipment can be useful if
- your feet or hands get numb easily
- you want to stay in the water a little longer or swim a few laps
- the dock or steps are icy and slippery
- the bottom of the ice hole is rocky
The socks and gloves do not make the water warmer, but they protect the parts of the body that cool down the fastest. Many find that the ice hole becomes more comfortable thanks to them and that the threshold to go back again is lowered.
How to choose ice swimming socks
Aqua Socks 2.5 mm is our warmest option. The heat-bonded seams keep the water out, and the long leg can be folded or shortened to your size. It is suitable for you if your toes get numb easily or if you stay in the water longer.
Aqua Socks 2.4 is made of 2.5 mm neoprene and has a grippy sole. A good choice if you walk on slippery docks and steps.
Aqua Socks 2.0 mm is a thinner and lighter sock with a non-slip sole. It is suitable for beginners and those who want the feeling to remain light.
Tip: if you are between two sizes, choose the larger one. If the bottom is rocky, it is advisable to wear sandals over the socks, as neoprene does not withstand sharp rocks.
Ice swimming gloves
Aqua Gloves are made of 2.5 mm neoprene. The heat-bonded seams prevent water from entering the glove, and the inner surface is seamless, so nothing chafes. Sizes XS–XL are suitable for both women and men.
How to use the equipment between the sauna and the ice hole
- Put on the socks and gloves on dry skin before going to the ice hole.
- There is no need to take off the equipment between the sauna and the ice hole – you can keep them on for the entire sauna trip.
- Rinse the equipment with fresh water after use and let it dry at room temperature, not directly on the heater or radiator.
Safely into the ice hole
- Start with short, 5–10 second dips and gradually increase the time.
- Do not go into the ice hole directly from a hot sauna, but let your body level out for a moment.
- Do not swim alone, and listen to your body's reactions.
- Neoprene protects against the cold, but it does not eliminate the effects of the cold on the body.
If you have heart or vascular disease or another underlying medical condition, discuss ice swimming with your doctor first.
